Hairballs happen when a cat swallows it’s fur while cleaning itself and are not able to discard the fur during defecation. This will then cause the cat to vomit in the attempt to get the hairball out. Constipation can also be a sign of hairballs.
Hairballs can happen to any cat, however, long haired cats seem to have the most problem. You can help by combing your cat on a daily basis to get rid of excess hair. This goes for short haired cats as well.
If you notice that hairballs are becoming a problem or your cat is unable to get rid of them, you can try a teaspoon of olive oil and mix it in with their wet cat food. Another alternative would be to use a tablespoon of canned pumpkin which is high in fiber and is good for your cat. When all else fails and you can’t seem to control the problem, perhaps it is time for a visit to the vet, and if you don’t want to be shocked by the bill then make sure you get pet insurance as soon as you can.
